DES MOINES – The Drake University men's tennis team opened a busy weekend with a hard-fought loss to Wichita State, 4-1, on Friday night at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Wichita State claimed a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Drake's
Freddie Powell/
David Nyman lost 6-1, and
Finley Hall/
Reid Jarvis couldn't climb out of a 3-0 hole, eventually losing 6-3. At No. 1,
Oliver Johansson/
Barny Thorold went unfinished after trailing 5-2.
The Shockers doubled their lead by defeating Nyman, 6-0, 6-0, on Court 5. Wichita State extended its lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Hall at No. 3.
With the Bulldogs needing a win, Johansson delivered in his debut at No. 1. The freshman gutted out a marathon of a first set, winning the first three games before dropping the next four. He battled back to make it 6-6, then took the tiebreaker, 8-6.
Johansson did not relent in the second set, taking the first five games before polishing off the win, 6-1.
The Bulldogs' rally fell short, however, as Powell fell 4-6, 6-4, 1-6 on Court 6. Thorold's and Jarvis' matches went unfinished in the third and second sets, respectively.
Drake returns to action with a pair of duals on Sunday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Bulldogs take on Middle Tennessee (9-1) at 11 a.m. before facing DePaul (2-5) at 3 p.m.
