ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Drake Relays alumni displayed impressive performances at the 2020 Toyota USATF Indoor Championship on Feb. 14-15 with native Iowan Shelby Houlihan, of the Bowerman Track Club, claiming two titles and eight other Relays almuni athletes earning national championships.
In the 3000m, Houlihan led a talented pack throughout the race until she clocked a blazing last lap to secure the win in 8:52.03. Bowerman teammate and fellow Iowan Karissa Schweizer finished close behind in 8:53.70. Houlihan, the American record holder in the outdoor 1500m and 5000m, also took the 1500 crown to earn her fifth double and 13
th USATF national title.
Tori Franklin made her last jump count to secure an American indoor record of 48-0.5/14.64 in the triple jump. In the vertical jumps, winners were Sandi Morris in the pole vault and Vashti Cunningham in the high jump. Ajee' Wilson held off a charging Kaela Edwards in the 800m for her seventh indoor national title.
Ryan Crouser earned the shot put gold with a world leading mark of 74-1.75/22.60 and former Hawkeye Aaron Mallett had a flawless race to win the 60m hurdles, his first national championship win. Erik Kynard claimed the high jump and Donald Scott bested the field to take the triple jump crown.
