Women's Tennis Downs Milwaukee, 4-1

DES MOINES – The Drake University women's tennis team ran the table in singles play to clinch a 4-1 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Milwaukee drew first blood with a pair of wins to take the doubles point. Carmen Palumbo/Daria Walczak fell 2-6 at No. 2, and Kelsey Neville/Maria Tatarnikova lost at No. 3, 2-6. Neville/Tatarnikova could not overcome the 4-0 deficit they faced at the beginning of the match.

Joely Lomas/Liza Petushkova, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week, led 5-4 when their match went unfinished. The Bulldogs' duo earned a break to take a 3-2 lead, then worked furiously to claim an extended deuce point to hold and push their lead to 5-3.

Lomas made quick work of her No. 3 singles match by recording a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win to even the dual at 1-1.

Petushkova continued Drake's momentum with a 6-4, 7-5 win on Court 1. Petushkova trailed 3-4 in the first set before winning the next three games to close it out. In the second set, she earned a break to take a 6-5 lead and held to finish the match.

Tatarnikova prevailed at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6, as Drake's advantage swelled to 3-1. Tatarnikova took the first three games in set one, and came back after facing a 4-5 deficit to win the tiebreaking set.

Palumbo sealed the deal for the Bulldogs, overcoming a deficit after dropping the first set, 5-7. She dominated en route to a 6-1 victory in the second set, and Palumbo clinched the dual with a 6-3 win in the third set.

Neville (4-6, 7-6, 0-1) went unfinished at No. 5, as did Megan Webb (4-6, 7-5, 1-1) at No. 6.

Drake (3-4) hosts Gustavus Adolphus at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
