DES MOINES – The Drake University women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over Kansas City (1-6) on Sunday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center to extend its winning streak to four duals in a row.
Drake (6-4) claimed the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead over the Roos. Kendall Hunt/Megan Webb won by default at No. 3, and Maria Tatarnikova/Daria Walczak took the first five games at No. 2 before closing out a 6-1 win. At No. 1, Joely Lomas/Liza Petushkova trailed 5-6 but came through in the clutch by staving off a deciding match point to force a tiebreaker. Lomas/Petushkova won the tiebreaker, 7-5, to push their winning streak to six.
Drake's advantage grew to 2-0 to begin singles play as Megan Webb won by default at No. 6. The injuries mounted for Kansas City as Walczak took the first set at No. 5, 6-2, before winning by retirement.
The Bulldogs stayed on the attack by notching wins at No. 3 (6-3, 6-4) and No. 2 (6-3, 6-4) thanks to strong performances by Tatarnikova and Lomas, respectively.
Petushkova overcame deficits in both sets to post a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 1. She has recorded five-straight singles triumphs, in addition to her six-straight doubles wins.
Carmen Palumbo closed out the perfect dual for Drake with a 7-6, 6-2 result at No. 4.
The Bulldogs will have two weeks to prepare for their upcoming west coast swing. Drake faces Santa Clara on March 15 before taking on San Jose State on March 17.
