DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis team fell to No. 16 Cornell, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (3-15) opened the dual with an impressive showing in doubles action. Evan Fragistas/Freddie Powell claimed a 6-3 victory at No. 3, and the freshman duo of Oliver Johansson/Matija Matic took a 6-4 win at No. 1 to seal a 1-0 lead for Drake. Reid Jarvis/Barny Thorold went unfinished at No. 2 with the score locked at 5-5.
Cornell (8-1) evened the dual at 1-1 after knocking off Finley Hall, 2-6, 2-6, at No. 5. The Big Red then jumped ahead 2-1 after downing Matic, 3-6, 4-6, at No. 6. After Jarvis lost at No. 3, 3-6, 4-6, Cornell's advantage swelled to 3-1.
Cornell clinched the dual with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Fragistas at No. 4. Johansson (3-6, 7-5, 1-0) and Thorold (6-4, 4-5) went unfinished at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
The Bulldogs return to action when they travel west for a pair of Sunday duals against Utah State and UC Santa Barbara.
