The Drake University women's basketball team dropped a close, hard-fought Missouri Valley Conference game at No. 25 Missouri State, 73-72, Friday night at JQH Arena.

Grace Berg had a game-high 25 points for Drake (7-7, 5-2 MVC), which came back from an 11-point early fourth-quarter deficit to have an opportunity to tie the game trailing 73-70 with 2.2 seconds left. Sarah Beth Gueldner, who scored a season-high 13 points off the bench making 5-of-5 shots, including 3-of-3 from the three-point line, made a contested jumper at the buzzer, but it was a two-pointer as Missouri State (7-2, 3-0 MVC) held on for the home win.

Abby Hipp, who scored 13 points for the Lady Bears, made a layup at the 9:18 mark in the final quarter. But Monica Burich answered and started a 6-0 Bulldogs' scoring run to pull within five points. Later, Allie Wooldridge nailed a deep three-pointer with five minutes in the game to make the score 65-61. Taylor McAulay scored a nice backdoor layup to make it a two-point game with 3:51 to go.

Later, Jasmine Franklin twice put Missouri State up by six points, the final time with two free throws with 1:43 left. But Drake answered first with Gueldner's final three-pointer of the night and Kierra Collier's steal and layup after a Lady Bears' basket made it 73-70 with 52 seconds to play.

Collier then rebounded a missed jumper and followed with a three-point try that was off the mark with 16 seconds left. The basketball stayed with Drake as Burich had a look from the three-point arc that missed with four seconds left. After a lengthy review to determine possession, the officials awarded the basketball to the Bulldogs with 2.2 seconds left. Gueldner's jumper at the buzzer followed.

The teams traded baskets at the start of the game as the Bulldogs trailed 25-16 after one quarter. Berg had eight points while Maggie Negaard had six points behind a pair of three-pointers. Berg had a tough break at the end of the first quarter as a late basket was ruled no good due to a shot clock violation.

Freshman Courtney Becker nailed a big three-pointer to start the second quarter to pull within six points. Missouri State built a double-digit lead, but Drake stayed steady to pull within nine points at halftime, 38-29. The Bulldogs struggled with turnovers as 15 led to 16 Lady Bears' points.

Berg and Burich scored back-to-back baskets out of halftime forcing a timeout by Missouri State. Later, Gueldner knocked down her first three-pointer that pulled the Bulldogs to within four points, 43-39, with just over six minutes in the third.

Drake had just seven turnovers after halftime that led to just seven points for Missouri State. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Lady Bears, 32-30, but MSU had 15 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second-chance points. Despite briefly leaving the game in the third quarter, Negaard finished with 10 points.
