DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's basketball team hosted its annual media day Monday afternoon in the Shivers Basketball Practice Facility.
Media day started with first-year head coach
Allison Pohlman highlighting her team and previewing the upcoming 2021-22 season. In her first season, Pohlman has eight returning letterwinners, including three starters while welcoming six newcomers.
The 2021 MVC Newcomer of the Year winner,
Grace Berg along with the 2021 MVC Sixth Player of the Year,
Maggie Bair and 2021 All-MVC First Team selection,
Maddie Petersen (Monahan) headline the returners.
Hannah Fuller joins Petersen in using the extra year granted by the NCAA due to the covid-19 pandemic. Both players are in their fifth years with the program and are joined by senior
Allie Wooldridge, who earned her first start last season and started 28 of the 30 games for the Bulldogs. Junior sharpshooter
Sarah Beth Gueldner will continue to stretch the floor. Sophomore
Courtney Becker played in every game but one her first season in 2020-21 and was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team.
Taylor McAulay, who made an impact in her first season on the floor in 2020-21, will miss the 2021-22 season due to injury.
Junior
Megan Meyer, who is from Mason City, transferred to Drake from the University of Iowa after two seasons. Meyer is joined by five talented freshmen, including three from central Iowa.
Katie Dinnebier,
Ashley Iiams and
Maggie Phipps are from Waukee, Ames and Ankeny, respectively.
Anna Miller from Rochester, Minn. and
Hannah Nilges from Jefferson City, Mo. are the Bulldogs' other freshmen.
Following Pohlman's opening remarks, student-athletes were made available for one-on-one interviews, photos and videos.
Drake hosts home exhibitions against Grand View (Nov. 3) and Minnesota State (Nov. 6) before the season opener against Creighton on Nov. 10 at the Knapp Center.
