The Drake University men's golf team has signed Cale Leonard (Ottumwa, Iowa) and Nate Spear (Burlington, Iowa) to National Letters of Intent for the 2022-23 season, Drake head men's golf coach Matt Lewis announced November 10.

"Cale had a tremendous summer and capped it off by winning the individual high school state title.  He has a ton of tournament experience and will make an immediate impact on the team," said Lewis. "Cale is a hard worker who will continue to push himself.  I am very excited to have him on the team!" 

Leonard finished in second placed in the 2021 Iowa Junior Open in August, 2021 and utilized that momentum to springboard his senior golf season. This past fall, Leonard capped off a successful high school career by winning the Iowa 4A State Golf Tournament by two strokes at five under par.

Also joining the Bulldogs is Nate Spear, who was voted the 2020 The Hawk Eye Boys Golfer of the Year. A First Team All-State Boys Class 4A selection, alongside fellow signee Cale Leonard, Spear finished 6^th in the Iowa 4A State Golf Tournament. Spear was the Champion of the John Deere Classic Junior Open at Deere Run in the summer of 2021.

"Nate also had a great summer!  He played in many state and regional events with several top finishes," noted Lewis. "Nate will fit right in with the team and definitely help us out in the future.  I am looking forward to coaching him and his future is bright at Drake!"
