DES MOINES -- The Drake University women's basketball team looked poised for an upset early, but 14th-ranked Iowa State rallied from a double-digit deficit and won 98-76 on Thursday night, ending the Bulldogs' three-game winning streak against the Cyclones at the Knapp Center.
"The game is 40 minutes. But that 10 minute glimpse at the begining, I think is what we can continue to reflect upon. We're right there and being able to put a few things together and really hone in on our chemistry," said head coach
Allison Pohlman. "For us to start the game with that much energy and poise, I couldn't be more proud of our team."
Freshman
Katie Dinnebier and redshirt junior
Grace Berg both put together their best games of the young season, Dinnebier scoring 19 points and Berg finishing with 17. It just wasn't enough against an Iowa State team that knocked down 15 3-pointers and got 31 points from two-time all-Big 12 selection Ashley Joens.
The 98 points were the most scored in the 61-game series by Iowa State (3-0), which won in Des Moines for the first time since Nov. 24, 2013.
Maggie Bair added 11 points for Drake (1-2), which forced ISU into a season-high 21 turnovers, and grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
Allie Wooldridge scored nine points and
Megan Meyer eight for the Bulldogs.
Dinnebier shot 7-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-5 on 3-pointers. She got her three other baskets on strong drives to the basket, the type of plays she made at Waukee High School last season when she was named Miss Iowa Basketball.
Dinnebier said, "Just hone in on the first quarter, I think it just shows how much potential our team has. We have a lot to work on and I think tonight was a great teaching point. We cand grow to develop that first quarter into second into third."
Berg battled through foul trouble to hit 7-of-11 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, made three steals and handed out two assists.
The Bulldogs were much smoother offensively than in Monday night's 61-46 loss to South Dakota, shooting 48 percent and going 10-for-24 from 3-point range. They rattled off 11 straight points to open a 23-14 lead late in the first quarter, getting 3s from
Maddie Petersen, Wooldridge and Dinnebier in that burst.
Berg's 3-pointer keyed a 6-0 run that stretched the lead to 31-20, which would be the Bulldogs' biggest of the game. Iowa State responded with three straight 3s -- two by Joens and one by her sister Aubrey -- to get back in it.
Pohlman said, "Berg had a phenominal showing tonight. It would have been nice to get her a few more touches down low or get her the ball on the move as well."
The Cyclones continued to make shots and get to the free throw line -- they were 17-of-20 for the game -- and led 47-42 at halftime. They pushed the lead to 64-53 midway through the third quarter and led by double figures the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs kept scrapping but could not match up with Ashley Joens, who had 29 points after three quarters. Her final line: 11-of-19 from the field, 5-for-11 on 3s, 4-for-4 at the line, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Drake faces another tall order in its next game, a visit to eighth-ranked Iowa on Sunday Nov. 21. The Bulldogs follow that with three games in Reno, Nev., starting Nov. 26 against Nevada.
