Drake Welcomes Richmond To The Knapp

The Drake University men's basketball team will host the Richmond Spiders of the Atlantic-10 Conference in a tilt at the Knapp Center Saturday Nov. 20. The noon tip will be broadcast on ESPN+ and fans will be able to tune into the action on 1350 ESPN Des Moines.

Drake (2-0) comes into the contest coming off the largest margin of victory in the Darian DeVries era, a 99-50 win over South Dakota at the Knapp Center on Sunday Nov. 14. The Bulldogs struggled from the field early, and Drake didn't record its first field goal until nearly six and half minutes into the opening half. However, Drake rode a 14-2 scoring run to break open the game and never looked back.

Drake shot 54 percent for the game including a blistering 64 percent in the second half. Drake's offense was balanced by a solid defensive effort. The Bulldogs held the Coyotes to 30.6 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.

The Bulldogs were led by ShanQuan Hempill's 14 points and Roman Penn's 13 point, three assist and one steal effort. 11 different Drake players scored in the game for a Bulldog program that received three votes in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Drake's opponent, the Richmond Spiders (2-1) come to Des Moines winners of their most recent match up, a 94-78 triumph over Georgia State on Nov. 16. Richmond's lone loss came 85-74 at the hands of Utah State Nov. 12.

Richmond is led by 6-10, 255-pound forward Grant Golden, who averages 19.3 points and six rebounds per game. The Spiders are also receiving 15.7 points per game from forward Tyler Burton and 10.7 points per game from guard Jacob Gilyard. Head Coach Chris Mooney, the winningest coach in Richmond history, is in his 17th season leading the Spiders.

The two teams have an average age of their starting lineup higher than most programs. Richmond's starting lineup in their first game was averaged at 23.4 years old and Drake's was 24.04 years old.
