Drake vs. Illinois State - Postgame Notes (Feb. 1)

TEAM NOTES
  • Drake improved its school-record start to 17-0. The 17 straight wins are the second-most in program history and ties for the third-longest by any of Iowa's four Division I programs.
  • Drake's 17 straight wins equal the fifth-best start ever by a Missouri Valley Conference school sharing 17-0 starts by Kansas State (1918-19) and Missouri in both 1919-20 as well as 1920-21.  
  • Drake's 35-point win tied for its fourth-biggest margin of victory in an MVC game in program history.
  • Drake improved to 37-4 at the Knapp Center under head coach Darian DeVries.
  • Drake is 8-0 in Valley play for the first time since 2007-08 and the third time in program history.
  • Drake collected 12 steals, marking the fourth time this season the Bulldogs have recorded 10-plus thefts in a game. The Bulldogs had 11 steals against Illinois State Sunday.
  • Drake made 13 three-point baskets, marking the fourth time the Bulldogs have made 10-plus treys in a game while also snapping a streak of three straight games in which Drake only made four three-point baskets.
  • Drake outrebounded Illinois State, 39-33, to improve to 48-7 in the last three seasons when outrebounding its opponent including 15-0 this season. 
  • Drake shot 51.5 percent (35-68) from the floor, marking the 10th game this season that the Bulldogs shot 50 percent or better.
  • The 25 assists by Drake were the most collected by a team in an MVC game this season and also marked the third time the Bulldogs had dished out 20 or more assists in a game. The previous high for assists by a team in an MVC league game was 24 by Loyola against Illinois State Dec. 28, 2020.
  • When Drake took a 20-point lead early in the second half, it marked the 12th game this season that Drake has had a 20-point or greater lead and the fourth time in conference play. 
  • Drake's 15-point halftime lead was its second-biggest in MVC play this season and eighth double-digit halftime lead of the season. Drake has led at halftime in all but two MVC games this season. Overall, Drake has led at halftime in 15 games this season. Under DeVries, Drake is 51-5 when leading at halftime. 
  • Drake hit the 80-point mark for the 10th time this season and improved to 26-0 under DeVries when scoring 80 or more points in a game. 
  • All 16 available Bulldogs checked into the game tonight.
     
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Tremell Murphy set a career-high of 30 points, the last 30-point game by a Bulldog was Nick Norton vs San Diego (12/23/18). The last in a regulation length game was Reed Timmer (2/14/18). He also set a career record for most three-pointers in a game with six. He grabbed eight rebounds for the Bulldogs and was +27 for them on the court.
  • ShanQuan Hemphill scored 18 points, nine in each half, to record his 15th game in double-figures this season. The Bulldogs were +30 with him on the court.
  • Jonah Jackson made his first three since Dec. 27 against Indiana State. He went 4-for-6 from the arc, finishing with 12 points to match a season high.
  • Garret Sturtz added nine points and eight rebounds to the books, thus being his third game this season with eight or more rebounds. 
  • Roman Penn had seven assists this season to mark the 12th time this season he had five or more assists in a game. 

SERIES NOTES   
  • Drake sweeps the season series against Illinois State for the first time since winning three straight games during the 2007-08 season including the MVC Tournament championship game.
  • This marked the biggest margin of victory by Drake in the all-time series against Illinois State, surpassing the previous series high that occurred in the 2008 MVC Tournament championship game, 79-49.
  • The 95 points are the second-highest point total Drake has ever scored in the all-time series against Illinois State
  • Drake improved to 34-62 all-time against the Redbirds, having won six of the last 11 meetings.
  • Drake is 16-14 against the Redbirds in the Knapp Center, having won four of the last five meetings at home.
