MVC Leaders Head to Illinois State For MVC Series

Bulldogs continue MVC season this weekend

The Missouri Valley Conference leading Drake University volleyball team travels Normal, Ill. this weekend to take on Illinois State Sunday and Monday afternoons. The first set of both games will begin at 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Bulldogs most recently swept Bradley, winning both matches 3-1. They are currently 4-0 in conference play and the team's only loss in seven games has come to No. 25 Marquette in a neutral-site match. The Bulldogs are 1-0 on the road this season with a win at UNI.

Setter Caitlyn Smith was responsible for a career-high 54 assists in the Bulldogs' last outing as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season. The junior is second in the Valley in assists and against Bradley, her direction of the offense led to an impressive .289 hitting percentage in the win. Haley Bush recorded a season-high 22 kills, on 55 attempts with one error, while three other Bulldogs added double digit kills, Emily Plock (12), Jada Wills (11) and Macy DeLeye (10).

Drake's efficient attack is currently second in the Valley in hitting percentage (.205) and assists per set (12.04). The Bulldogs also have a talented defense, owning the current conference lead in digs per set with 19.69.

Illinois State sits with an even 4-4 record overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Redbirds split both doubleheaders with Bradley and Indiana State. They lost 3-1 in their last match against Indiana State. Kaylee Martin leads the team with 4.15 kills per set as Stef Jankiewicz sets Martin up with an average of 9.14 assists per set. Illinois State won both contests last year against the Bulldogs.

Following the match Monday, the Bulldogs will continue their road schedule with matches at Missouri State on Feb. 21-22.
