Drake vs. Loyola Postgame Notes - Feb. 14

TEAM NOTES
  • This marked Drake's first win over an Associated Press Top 25 team since earning a 74-69 victory against No. 17 ranked Creighton in Des Moines, Jan. 23, 2013. The Bulldogs had dropped five straight games to top-25 nationally ranked teams (dating back to 2013-14 season) until today.
  • Drake improved its overall record to 20-2, marking the third straight 20-win campaign under third-year coach Darian DeVries and the eighth 20-win season in program history.
  • Drake has three-consecutive 20-win seasons for the second time in program history. The Bulldogs last had three-straight 20-win seasons from 1968-69 to 1970-71.
  • The Bulldogs moved to 11-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference pulling to within one-half game of league leader Loyola which stands at 12-2. Drake's 11 MVC wins are tied for the sixth-most in program history.
  • Drake snapped Loyola's 11-game winning steak which also included seven straight road victories.
  • Drake moved to 4-2 in overtime games under Coach Darin DeVries, including 3-0 at home.
  • Drake improved to 39-5 at home under coach Darin DeVries era, including 12-1 at home this season
  • Drake's 51 points were season low and the fourth lowest scored in the past three seasons. The previous three lowest were all losses. It was the second-fewest points the Bulldogs have scored at home under DeVries. 
  • Drake scored a season-low 22 points in first half, eclipsing previous low of 24 at Valparaiso last Sunday. It is the fourth time Drake has been held to fewer than 30 points at halftime this season.
  • Drake trailed at halftime for the fifth time this season, including the first time in a home game. The Bulldogs are now 4-1 when that feat occurs..
  • Drake collected five blocked shots, marking the third time the Bulldogs had blocked five or more shots in a game this season. Three of the blocked shots occurred in the last seven seconds of overtime.
  • Drake was held to season low five assists.
  • Drake's 33.3 percent field goal percentage (19-57) was its second lowest shooting effort of season.
  • Drake improved to 12-0 this season when DJ Wilkins makes two or more treys in a game.
  • Drake improved to 9-0 this season when Darnell Brodie collected eight or more rebounds.
  • Drake forced a Loyola into a season-high 19 turnovers - the most the Bulldogs have forced an MVC opponent this season
  • Drake held Loyola to a season-low 35.1 percent shooting (20-57), ending the Ramblers' five-game streak of shooting 50 percent or better. On Saturday Loyola shot 63.8 percent- the highest percentage by a Drake opponent this season.
  • The Bulldogs also held Loyola to a season-low 50 points- one day after allowing the Ramblers 81 points, the most points it had surrendered to an opponent this season.
  • Drake was outrebounded (46-29) for just the fourth time in 22 games this season but now owns a 3-1 record when that feat occurs.
  • Drake was outscored in the paint, 24-20  to mark the fourth time this season the Bulldogs have been outscored in the paint.
 
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Tremell Murphy led the Bulldogs with 17 points, being one of only two Bulldogs to make a three-pointer. He tallied three blocks making it the 10th game this season with at least one block. He also grabbed five rebounds for the team.  
  • D.J. Wilkins added 11 points, including nine in the second half. He was the only Drake player to make two three-point baskets while enjoying his first game with multiple three-pointers in the last six contests.
  • Roman Penn tallied his seventh game this season with less than five assists, ending with three. He now sits in eighth place for most career assists at Drake. He also added 10 points. He added a season-high five steals, which are his most as a Bulldog.
  • Roman Penn's five steals tied for the most by a player in the Valley this season.
  • Garrett Sturtz grabbed six rebounds for the Bulldogs and two steals. 
  • Darnell Brodie recorded his sixth game this season with a blocked shot. He grabbed eight rebounds and ended with nine points.
 
SERIES NOTES
  • Drake, snapping a two-game losing streak to Loyola, moved to 14-21 in the all-time series against the Rambles including a 5-4 mark in the Knapp Center.
