Drake vs. Evansville Postgame Notes - Feb. 22

TEAM NOTES
  • Drake improved its record to 23-2, while matching the best start to a season in program history sharing same mark as the 2007-08 Drake team
  • The 23 wins are the fourth-most victories in program history
  • Drake moved to 14-2 in league play which is the second best start to an MVC season in program history. The Bulldogs also moved into a tie for first place with Loyola entering the final weekend of the regular season.
  • The 14 MVC wins are tied for the second-most in program history along with the 1969-70 Bulldog team.
  • Drake improved to 14-1 at home this season and 41-5 over the last three seasons
  • Drake is 34-18 in MVC games under coach Darian DeVries
  • Drake recorded a season-high eight blocked shots, bettering the previous high of seven against McKendree.
  • Drake shot 53.2 percent from the floor (25-47), marking the 14th time the Bulldogs had shot 50 percent or better in a game this season. It also was the eighth time in Valley play, including a third straight game.
  • Drake outrebounded Evansville, 35-20, marking the tenth game this season in which the Bulldogs have outrebounded an opponent by double digits. It also ended a string of four straight games in which Drake had been outrebounded.
  • Drake's 35-31 halftime deficit marked just the second time the Bulldogs have trailed at half in 15 home games this season. Drake rallied from a 25-22 halftime deficit to beat Loyola, 51-50, in overtime Feb. 14.
  • Joseph Yesufu's back-to-back games of 32 and 36 points against Evansville, marked the first time that feat had occurred by a Drake player since Eric Berger had 35 and 32 points against Illinois-Chicago and Mississippi Valley State, respectively, at Vets Auditorium in Des Moines Dec. 28 and 30, 1988.
  • Drake improved to 14-0 when DJ Wilkins has multiple three-point baskets in a game. He had three tonight.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Joseph Yesufu, in his first collegiate start replacing the injured Roman Penn, set a career high of 36 points, while enjoying his second straight 30-plus scoring game. He also set a career high in blocks with two, while tying a career high with five three-point baskets and grabbing a season-high five rebounds.
  • Yesufu's 36 points were the most by a player in the Missouri Valley Conference this season and tie for the 25th most in Drake history.
  • Garrett Sturtz enjoyed his second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He added two assists and one block for the Bulldogs. 
  • Tremell Murphy collected a career-high four blocked shots, bettering his previous mark of 3 vs. McKendree Dec. 9. He added eight rebounds and three assists to the books. 
  • Issa Samake established career highs in rebounds (six),  free throws made (four) and free throws attempted (six).
  • DJ Wilkins, who scored 11 points, tied a season-high with five rebounds. He made three three-point baskets, marking the ninth time he has made three or more treys in a game this season

SERIES NOTES
  • Drake, earning its fifth straight win against the Purple Aces, evened the all-time series record against Evansville to 28-28.
  • The fifth-straight win ties for Drake's second-longest win streak in the series and longest since 2011-13.
  • Drake is 18-10 in Des Moines against Evansville, while winning its sixth straight home game in the series.
