Men's Tennis Welcomes Utah And Illinois State

Bulldogs to host a Pac-12 foe and open league

The Drake University men's tennis team prepares for a significant week of matches as it hosts a Pac-12 opponent and open Summit League play. Utah travels to the Roger Knapp Tennis Center Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. match. The conference opener against Illinois State will also be at home Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Bulldogs lost their season opener to Northern Illinois in a tight 4-3 finish. Oliver Johansson and Benedek Herman won both their singles matches as well as a doubles match that they competed in together. Evan Fragistas also prevailed in his singles competition.

Utah (7-3) was most recently topped 4-3 at home against Denver, one of Drake's Summit League rivals. The last time Drake and Utah met was in Lincoln, Neb. in March of 2014. The Bulldogs had a near perfect match, winning 7-0.

Utah is the first Pac-12 opponent to come to the Roger Knapp Tennis Center since a 15th ranked Oregon team battled the Bulldogs and won 6-1. Drake is 3-7 against Pac-12 teams, two of which were post-season matches in the last nine seasons under head coach Davidson Kozlowski.

The Bulldogs will challenge Illinois State to begin Summit League conference play. Due to COVID-19, the conference matches were largely canceled a season ago. However, before the cancellation of the spring season, Drake claimed a 6-1 victory over Illinois State Feb. 27, 2020.

Illinois State is currently 4-9 on the season.They are scheduled to play Saint Louis on Wednesday before their battle with the Bulldogs on Sunday. Drake has gone 9-1 in the last 10 meetings with Illinois State and has won all the last five matches.

Following these two home matches, the Bulldogs will begin the first of a pair of road games as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan on Mar. 6.
