The Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom invites members of the Greater Des Moines and Central Iowa community to join them in cheering on Iowa native Karissa Schweizer Saturday, August 7, as she competes in the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Dowling Catholic graduate and Drake Relays record holder will race in her first Olympics against the world's best at 5:40 a.m. as she competes for gold. Fans can gather on Court Avenue at 5:30 a.m. to watch and support Schweizer. Fans are also encouraged to partake in a pre or post-race run of their own on the streets of Des Moines before enjoying the Downtown Farmers' Market at 7 a.m.
"We're excited to team up not only with Mediacom, but our partners and Catch Des Moines and the Greater Des Moines Partnership to cheer on Karissa," said
Blake Boldon, the Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Relays. "It will be exciting to gather as a community, along with the Schweizer family, to support one of our home-grown Olympians that has such a special connection to the Drake Relays and our community."
Schweizer's race also comes on the final day of the Olympic sale for the Grand Blue Mile presented by Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. The sale begins August 4 and offers discounted $10 pricing through the final rounds of the 1,500 meters in Tokyo. Three past Grand Blue Mile champions are also competing in Tokyo with Matthew Centrowitz, Clayton Murphy and Rachel Schneider all competing as part of seven total past Grand Blue Mile runners competing in Tokyo.
