OMAHA, NEB. -- The Drake women's soccer team fell to former MVC foe Creighton, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
In the 21st minute of play Creighton's Cristina Garriga scored off a pass from Renee Poutnay, putting the Bluejays up 1-0.
"It was an interesting start to the game today. The first time we got out, we earned a corner and hit the crossbar, but still seemed unsure of our own mentality in the game," said head coach
Lindsey Horner.
Creighton out-shot the Bulldogs 10-2 in the first half and the Bluejays were able to maintain possession most of the match.
In the 51st minute, Creighton's Abigal Santana managed to get past the Bulldogs defense and score to put to Bluejays up 2-0.
Sophomore
Emma Nagel recorded three shots in the match and one shot on goal which was blocked. Senior
Libby Helverson was the only other Bulldog to register a shot on goal, which was off target.
The Bulldogs defensive efforts were led by senior goalkeeper
Kelsie Stone and junior's
Delaney Goertzen and
Megan Valenzuela. Goertzen registered one shot early in the second half.
Stone faced a total of 18 shots and recorded eight saves in her 90 minutes on the pitch. In the Bulldogs' first two outings, Stone has stopped 18 total shots.
Horner said, "We demonstrated we can be organized and defend tough as a unit on Thursday and unfortunately today we didn't communicate at a high level and help simplify the game for each other. These are easy fixes that come from within and I look forward to our response this coming week."
With the loss, the Bulldogs now have a 7-11-1 all-time record against the Bluejays.
The Bulldogs return to Drake Stadium Thursday Aug. 26 to take on BIG 10 opponent Minnesota. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
