The Drake women's soccer team tied Western Illinois, 0-0 in double overtime, Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs also celebrated Senior Day prior to the match, which recognized their seven seniors.
The Bulldogs out-shot the Leathernecks 16-15. The Leathernecks registered 10 shots on goal, compared to Drake's seven. Possession was split between the two teams throughout the match.
"We are really pleased with our shutout today as WIU has scored a lot of goals this season and knocked off three other MVC teams. We certainly had the better chances but couldn't find the back of the net," said head coach
Lindsey Horner. "It felt like we weren't going to concede, but just ran out of time to find the goal which says a lot about our defensive performance today."
Drake fired off three shots early in the first half. Senior
Libby Helverson attempted to score but went wide and her second shot when over the crossbar. Freshman
Haley Horman also attempted to score for the Bulldogs, but went above the crossbar as well.
Helverson ended with four shots in her 90 minutes on the pitch. Six Bulldogs registered at least one shot on goal in the match.
In the 24th minute, Western Illinois registered their first shot, but fifth year keeper
Kelsie Stone stopped the ball from finding the net.
Stone registered 10 saves in her 110 minutes on the pitch and faced a total of 25 shots. This was the fourth match this season that Stone registered 10 saves for the Bulldogs and her fifth shutout. She also tied the school record for most shutouts in her career with 20. Kate Stack is the only other player in program history to record 20 career shutouts.
Alongside Stone, the Bulldogs defensive efforts were led by senior
Megan Valenzuela, junior
Delaney Goertzen, and junior
Chloe Jones.
Drake attempted to craft a number of scoring opportunities, but was unsuccessful.
The wind and heat played a factor for both teams throughout the match.
Horner said, "This was a hot game that took a lot out of us physically, but we can't let it impact our mindset heading into MVC play."
Western Illinois was led by Leah Ahlers and Bridget Schuler, each registering three shots. Ahlers and Jenna Lundgren both registered two shots on goal each.
"This is the longest break between games so we can rest up and then start preparing for an important game at Evansville on Saturday," said Horner.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday Sept. 25 as they head to Indiana to take on Evansville at 1 p.m, for their first conference match of the season.
