ST. LOUIS – Fifth-year safety
Alex Rogers of the Drake University football team was named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week, the PFL announced Sunday, Sept. 5. It is the first career PFL Defensive Player of the Week award for Rogers, who helped Drake race past West Virginia Wesleyan, 45-3, in the season opener.
Rogers collected his first career interception midway through the second quarter with Wesleyan driving deep into Bulldogs' territory. He intercepted the pass at the 8-yard line and returned it 18 yards and with a personal foul added on, his pick put Drake near midfield. The Bulldogs converted the turnover into a touchdown seven plays later. Rogers added three tackles (two solo) in the big victory as Drake's defense held West Virginia Wesleyan to 136 passing yards and 179 total offensive yards on only 53 plays from scrimmage.
Rogers and his teammates travel to Bozeman, Mont. to face Montana State on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. CST.
