The Drake women's soccer team played 94 minutes before scoring to beat St. Thomas, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium for the team's third-straight win.
"We knew we were going to start today on tired legs with the quick turnaround from Friday, but I'm really pleased for the minutes we got from
Vianey Lopez, Brooke Davis,
Olivia Bruce, and
Tori Ubben," said Drake head coach
Lindsey Horner.
In the 94th minute, freshman
Makenna Shepard passed into the box to find the head of senior
Libby Helverson who then scored for the Bulldogs. Helverson leads the team in shots this season with seven and points with four.
Drake out-shot St. Thomas 12-8, tallying eight shots in the second period alone.
St. Thomas maintained possession most of the second half and had a number of scoring opportunities. But the Tommies' were unable to get past Drake's defense and goalkeeper
Vianey Lopez.
Lopez recorded her first collegiate start and tallied two saves after facing eight shots.
"Part of grinding out two wins on the weekend came from our depth," Horner said. "I felt we had a lot of the momentum in the second half, and that carried over into overtime. I was hoping we would be more dangerous on our corners, but we did create some good moments from service from wide areas."
The Tommies best scoring opportunity came in the 82nd minute when Jasmine Gates found herself in the box but was stopped by a number of Drake players who blocked her shot. Tess Phillips quickly found the ball and also attempted to score, but was unsuccessful when the ball when over the top of the goal.
"We are very happy for Libby's goal as she got up and won the header, pressed the center back then shaped her finish. Overall, a great weekend to come away with two shutout wins," said Horner.
The Bulldogs hit the road to take on South Dakota Thursday Sept. 9 at 6 p.m.
