The Drake men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three matches after taking down St. Thomas, 1-0, Monday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn.
"We started the game very well with a great mentality and a high level of intensity. We looked in control positionally and comfortable in possession for the first 35 minutes which resulted in us scoring and creating three to four very good goal scoring chances. We pushed for a second because we know that at 1-0 the opponent is always still in the game," said head coach
Gareth Smith.
In the 37th minute, senior
Bradan Allen found the lower left of the net to score for the Bulldogs (3-1-0), putting them up, 1-0. Allen ended the match with two shots and one on goal.
Senior
Juan Louis recorded five shots and three on goal in his time on the pitch. Louis leads the Bulldogs in goals this season with two.
Freshman
Clarence Weah recorded a season high of two shots and two on goal in his eight minutes on the pitch.
Both teams recorded 12 shots but the Tommies' (0-5-0) outshot the Bulldogs 9-8 on goal.
Smith said, "The second half was a little more back and forth as St Thomas pushed to get back in the game, which turned the game into a transitional game more than we would have liked. We still created two excellent chance to make the game 2-0. If we get a second goal I think it changes the nature of the game. The squad depth was important to help us with three tough games this week."
Drake held possession for 53 percent of the match and the Tommies' were unable to get past Drake keeper
Jared Brown. The Bulldogs defensive efforts were led by Brown,
TC Anderson, and
Declan Watters.
Brown recorded a season-high of eight saves after facing 12 shots. Brown's eight saves were the most he recorded in a match since 2018.
"We have some areas to polish up both in and out of possession, but overall we are satisfied with the guys attitude, application, and desire to compete and win games. We now need to focus on recovery and preparation for Friday's match," said Smith.
The Bulldogs head to Nebraska Friday Sept. 10 to take on former MVC foe Creighton at 7 p.m.
