Bulldogs Shut Down Belmont for Senior Day Victory

On Senior Day, the Drake men's soccer team shut out Belmont to get back into the win column.

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's soccer team stifled Belmont in a 2-0 clean sheet Senior Day victory at Cownie Soccer Complex on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Bulldogs improved to 5-2-3 overall with a 3-1 record in Missouri Valley Conference play while the Bruins dropped to 5-3-4 (2-2-2).

Braden Allen, Jonathan Burke, Leroy Enzugusi, Sam Thornton, Declan Watters, Kason Crall, Antonio Melendez and Nick Mishu were honored before the game on Senior Day.

"Belmont is a fantastic team with a lot of experience," head coach Pat Flinn said. "That makes today's result even sweeter for our team. It was a team performance. On a day we were celebrating our eight selfless seniors, I could not be prouder of the entire group."

Brennan Rzewuski helped the Bulldogs strike first with his first goal in the Drake uniform. Damian Segura placed a corner kick in the 23rd minute into the six-yard box, where Rzewuski knocked it into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Bruins were limited to two total shots in the first half as Drake controlled a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The one-goal advantage for the home team remained until another Bulldog chance presented itself in the 79th minute. Enzugusi charged to the right side of the 18-yard box where he unloaded a pass to Timmy Browning. The freshman connected with Thornton who did the rest firing a shot into the lower right corner of the net.

Up 2-0, Drake didn't just want to win but secure a shutout as well. After the ensuing kickoff, Jansen Wilson's shot missed to the left of the goal for Belmont. In the 85th minute, Case Cox put a shot on at the net that was corralled by Burke. That proved to be the final shot from the Bruins in a dominant 2-0 victory.
