Bulldogs Blank Sycamores in Key Road Win

Rachel Panther and Meghan Brown scored off incredible assists while the defense held strong for a shutout victory.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Drake University women's soccer team recorded its second shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Indiana State at Memorial Stadium on Sunday, Oct 16. Drake improved to 3-7-6 overall and 2-2-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference while Indiana State fell to 2-9-3 (2-4-2).

"We are so pleased with a shutout win on the road," head coach Lindsey Horner said. "Today we looked disciplined and organized. Our team did a great job of blocking shots and crosses."

Drake came out firing with Emma Nagel taking a shot that missed over the top right of the goal only four minutes into the contest. Despite the miss, it was clear that the Bulldog offense was determined to be the aggressor early.

Rachel Panther has led Drake in assists and shots throughout the year. In the 24th minute, Panther was on the other side of the assist category punching in her first goal of the season. Brooke Davies crossed a free kick to Panther inside the 18-yard box and she headed it toward the goal. Indiana State goalkeeper Tara Hoffman could not corral the ball as it ended up in the back corner of the net.

Six different Drake players had shots in the first half as the Bulldogs controlled a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Between the 48th and 58th minute, the Sycamores outshot Drake by an 8-1 margin including shots in a row between the 52nd and 56th minute. Drake's defense prevailed and combated all of the Sycamore attempts.

"We weathered Indiana State's push to throw numbers forward as they tried to get back into the game," Horner said. "The pressure of carrying the lead while our opponent throws everything they can at us has hurt us at times. We proved to be resilient."

Panther let off a shot in the 60th and 62nd minute, respectively. Both shots were off target, but the Bulldogs reclaimed the driver's seat.

Meghan Brown increased the pressure on the Sycamore with a rocket into the top right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute. Brown's fourth goal of the season was set up by a headed ball from Lauren Kullberg after a touch pass by Panther.

Despite being outshot 12-7 in the second half, the Bulldogs put together one of their best overall performances of the season to secure the clean sheet victory.

"Our seniors came to play today, Horner said. "That makes critical games at this point in the season winnable."

The Bulldogs return home to Drake Stadium for their final two games of the regular season starting on Thursday, Oct. 20 versus Belmont at 7 p.m.
