PEORIA, Ill. – Drake men's soccer suffered their second loss of the season tonight. The Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 contest at Bradley in a Missouri Valley Conference tilt. The Bulldogs are now 4-2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Bradley earned its third win of the season and first in league action.
Drake dominated the first half of action with 12 shots to Bradley's zero. The Bulldogs also attempted seven corner kicks while Bradley had none. Both teams played to a scoreless tie at the break.
After halftime, the physicality and intensity increased from both sides. Bradley found some footing with four total shot attempts in the final 45 minutes. Late in the game, in the 72nd minute, Patrick Fishburne lined up a corner kick. Fishburne's delivery was corralled by Braden Griffin and deposited in the goal for the game's first score. Griffin's goal, his first of the year, would eventually be the difference.
Despite outshooting Bradley 18-4 and attempting a dozen more corner kicks, the Bulldogs could not climb back.
Leroy Enzugusi led the Bulldogs with six total shots followed by
AJ Franklin and
Bradan Allen with three apiece.
Jonathan Burke made just one key save in his 90 minutes in goal.
"Full credit to Bradley," Drake head coach
Pat Flinn explained after the loss. "They defended us well enough to keep us off the scoreboard…they found a goal off a set piece during a phase in the game where we lost the control we'd maintained for most of the match. I think we needed to take a step back to take two [steps] forward. We'll get to work and be ready for Wisconsin on Monday."
The Dogs will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 10 with their 2022 non-conference finale when Drake travels to Wisconsin.
