DES MOINES, IOWA -- The Drake University men's tennis team swept Northern Illinois 7-0, Friday evening in Des Moines to mark their third straight win.
The Bulldogs found success in both the singles and doubles portion of the evening.
Oliver Johansson and
Jeremy Schifris defeated Mikko Malinen and Mikael Vollbach 6-2. The Bulldog duo took the first point, but the Huskies took the next to tie it 1-1. Johansson and Schifris took the next three points before NIU was able to pick up their second.
Matija Matic and
Evan Fragistas defeated their competitors from NIU, 6-3, after taking the initial point.
All six singles matches were won by the Bulldogs and they used momentum from doubles to race out to strong starts in singles play by winning 5 of the first sets.
Fragistas opened up with a win for Drake in the first match. He swept his opponent 6-0 in the first set and took the first three points of set two before NIU scored their first.
Johansson was the only Bulldog who's match went into a third set. Despite his opponent, Malinen, taking the first set 7-6, Johansson fought back. In set two, he took the first point and Malinen took the second, but that was NIU's only chance for a point as Johansson took the next five straight to win set two. Set three ended up going to nine points as the two opponents continued to battle for the win.
Johansson came out on top in the end to give the Bulldogs another win in the singles event.
Markus Bolin defeated NIU's Armin Koschtojan, 7-5, 6-1.
Reid Jarvis clinched the win for the Bulldogs with his straight win on court six.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday March 13, as they take on Vanderbilt in Nashville to kick off their spring break.
