USATF Outdoor Championships to Feature Past Drake Relays Champions

Past Drake Relays Champions highlight the 2022 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – One hundred thirty-eight Drake Relays alumni, including 60 athletes who have captured Drake Relays titles, are set to compete at the Toyota United States Track and Field Championships, beginning Thursday (June 23) at Hayward Field.

The competition will serve as a selection event for the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 - the first of its kind to take place on U.S. soil in Eugene July 15-24.

If that's not enough there are 23 athletes competing in the four-day meet who are either native Iowans or attended a college or university in Iowa.

Forty-four athletes with Drake Relays ties represented Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics last year led by world record holder Ryan Crouser who captured his second straight Olympic gold in the men's shot put and Katie Nageotte who won gold in the women's pole vault. Crouser has won the last four Drake Relays men's invitational shot put titles dating back to 2018.

The list of performers competing at the national championships also includes 19 athletes who captured titles at the 2022 Drake Relays including the meet's outstanding men's and women's performers in sprinter Randolph Ross  and long hurdler Dalilah Muhammad, respectively.

Ross, who recently won his second straight NCAA Outdoor 400 title for North Carolina A&T, set a Drake Relays record in the men's university-college 400 in 44.95, while running the anchor leg on the Aggies' 4x100 relay which set another Drake Relays record of 38.84.

Muhammad, who earned a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics, ran a world leading time of 53.88 April 30 to win her first ever Drake Relays crown in the women's 400 hurdles. Muhammad set a world record (52.16) in the 400 hurdles when Drake Stadium hosted the 2019 USA Outdoor Championships.

Other former Drake Relays outstanding performers who are scheduled to compete at the USA Championships include sprinter Isiah Young (2013), in the men's 100 & 200; Chris Nilsen (2019) in men's pole vault; Karissa Schweizer (2018) in women's 1,500 and 5,000; and Cambrea Sturgis (2021) in women's 100 and 200.

The USA Outdoor 10,000 meter title was held May 27 with Schweizer winning the title. She will have a busy weekend, competing in both the 1,500and 5,000.
