The Basics
The Drake University women's soccer team will officially open the 2022 season against the Kansas City Roos on Thursday, August 18 at 6 p.m.
Lindsey Horner Back at the Helm
Lindsey Horner will begin her 12th season as the Bulldogs head coach where she owns a 104-97-30 record.
Non-Conference Schedule Outlook
"Our non-conference schedule is challenging both in the talent level of our opponents as well as how much we are on the road, but I hope that prepares us for our MVC season," Horner said.
Returners
Horner is not the only familiar face as Drake has four players (
Lily Overstreet,
Emma Nagel,
Haley Horman and
Delaney Goertzen) returning that started in 15 or more games in 2022. Junior, Nagel and senior Goertzen were key players in the last meeting versus the Roos with Goertzen assisting on Nagel's goal that started Drake's shutout.
The offense will run through midfielders Nagel (second with four goals) and senior Rachael Panther (t-3rd with three goals).
2021 Season Recap
Drake finished the 2021 season fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference with an overall record of 8-7-5 (2-3-3 in MVC). UIC, Belmont and Murray State join the MVC as the Bulldogs set their eyes on getting back to the MVC Championship game for the first time since 2018.
"With Loyola leaving the league and three new teams joining, there are a lot of teams that could potentially take home the conference trophy and our goal is to put ourselves in a position to raise trophies," Horner said.
Scouting Kansas City
Kansas City ended 2022 in sixth place in the Summit League with an overall record of 6-13 (4-5 in the Summit). The Roos were one of the better defensive teams in the Summit under third year head coach, Jessica Smith (10-25-1). Kansas City recorded the most saves with 116 and ranked fifth in save percentage. Goalie Mackenzie Caldwell is returning for her junior year after an impressive sophomore season where she ranked first in the Summit League in total saves with 98 and in saves per game averaging 6.53.
