Beacons Hand Bulldogs Their First MVC Loss of Season

A strong push in the beginning was not enough as Drake women's soccer fell in Sunday's road contest at Valparaiso.

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- The Drake women's soccer team fell to Valparaiso 2-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play at Brown Field on Sunday, Sept. 25. Drake moved to 1-6-4 (0-1-2) on the season while the Beacons are off to a 3-0 start in the MVC with a 4-5-2 overall record.

The first half was the typical Valley matchup with strong defense, organized offenses, and physical play.  The Drake Bulldogs were in control at the start of the match. Haley Horman put Drake in scoring position early with her first shot in the 11th minute and Layla Kelbel's shot followed in the 14th minute. The shots were off target, but the early offensive pressure was a promising start.

"We had a very strong start and we were in control for the first 30 minutes of the game," Horner said.

Both offenses had opportunities to gain the lead, but the score was knotted at zero. Valpo and Drake combined for ten shots and no goals in 34 minutes of play.

In the 35th minute, Valpo's offense put the Bulldog defense on their heels after getting out on a two-on-one break. Off the bench, Addy Joiner scored the game's first goal with a shot from the six-yard box that rolled past a diving Lopez in the bottom center of the net off her right foot. Her third goal of the season was set up by last week's MVC Freshman of the Week Molly O'Rear.

Drake entered halftime down 1-0 and the second half continued much like the first with Drake's defense keeping the Beacons from adding on to their lead. While the defense was stout, the Bulldog offense did not find the back of the net.

"We had moments to test (Coryell)," Horner said. "We either passed or didn't get our chance on frame."

Valpo increased its lead to 2-0 after a corner kick by Allie Anderson was placed perfectly, providing Natalie Graf an opportunity to score in the 61st minute. The Bulldogs put themselves in a position to defend the Valpo attack but Graf's header took an unlucky bounce off the left goal post dribbling past Lopez and the Bulldog defenders.

"All focus turns to Illinois State on Thursday as we need three points from this game," Horner said.

Drake women's soccer will play host to Illinois State on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
