Women's Soccer Forces Draw, Snaps South Dakota State's Home Winning Streak

Defense was key as the Bulldogs tied the defending Summit League Champions in a physical contest.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Drake University women's soccer defense stepped up on the road to force a 1-1 tie with undefeated South Dakota State at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday, Sept. 4. Drake's overall record moved to 1-4-1 while the Jackrabbits remain unbeaten at 4-0-2.

Securing a result in Brookings, S.D., is no easy feat as the Jackrabbits had won 12 consecutive home games dating back to March 21, 2021. South Dakota State is coming off an undefeated 9-0 record at home last season en route to a 17-4-3 2021 campaign.

"South Dakota State is a very good team with a veteran roster," head coach Lindsey Horner said. "Their place is a difficult place to play. We want to get better from each non-conference game and tonight we certainly achieved that."

South Dakota State took control of the first half and did not look back. The Jackrabbits put Drake on the defensive. SDSU had 13 total shots through the first 45 minutes of play. Despite South Dakota State's seven shots on goal and constant pressure, Drake senior goalkeeper Vianey Lopez tallied seven total saves to tie her 2022 single-game high in the first half alone.

For the Bulldogs, their lone shot of the first half came from freshman forward Layla Kelbel in the 31st minute. The Bulldogs and Jackrabbits went into halftime scoreless in a defensive battle.

Five minutes into the second half, the Drake offense got some help from the South Dakota State defense after midfielder Madelyn Smith sent a cross that led to South Dakota State's senior defender Delaney Grant scoring on her own goal in the 50th minute.

The 1-0 lead did not stand for long. SDSU utilized a precision lead pass from Karlee Manding to set up a Reagan Anderson goal in the 53rd minute to even score, 1-1.

Like most of the first half, the final 37 minutes of gameplay was physical and required Drake's defense to dig deep when the Jackrabbits were advancing. Lopez kept the reigning Summit League champions off the scoreboard by recording two more saves. The Bulldog defenders came to her aid helping misdirect South Dakota State's nine shots in the second half.

"We took on a more defensive shape to help secure a result," Horner said. "I'm proud that we got better during this game and dug deep to battle."

Defensive pressure was key. Most notably, Drake limited the Summit League's leading passers Kaycee and Karlee Manding as they combined for three shots and zero assists.

Drake women's soccer will play next at South Dakota on Thursday, Sept 8 with a 6 p.m. kickoff
