Men's Basketball Preview: Southern Illinois

Drake men's basketball will host Southern Illinois in a critical Saturday matinee.

The Basics
The Drake men's basketball team will be back inside the Knapp Center to host Southern Illinois in a Missouri Valley Conference first place showdown on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. Saturday is men's basketball Alumni Day with former Drake men's basketball players honored at halftime.
 
Broadcast Information
Saturday's game against Southern Illinois will be broadcasted live on ESPNU with play-by-play announcer James Westling and analyst Kevin Lehman.

102.1/1350 ESPN Des Moines is the radio home of Drake men's basketball with Michael Admire back to describe the play-by-play with Paul Doerrfeld providing analysis.

Scouting Southern Illinois
Southern Illinois carries a 19-7 overall record including an 11-4 Missouri Valley Conference mark into Saturday's game.

The Salukis fended off a ferocious UIC comeback in a 68-66 win over the Flames on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Senior forward Marcus Domask paced SIU with 24 points and six assists while Lance Jones added 12 points. Southern Illinois finished 18-of-22 from the free throw line against UIC.
 
Domask averages 17.1 points and 5.8 rebounds while dishing out a total of 98 assists so far this season. Jones has produced 14.2 points per game and has swiped a total of 46 steals.
 
Southern Illinois was picked to finish third in the 2022-23 MVC preseason poll with one first place vote.
 
SIU Athletics Hall of Famer Bryan Mullins is in his fourth season leading his alma mater with an over record of 63-52.

Series vs. Southern Illinois
SIU controls the all-time series, 61-41.

The Bulldogs entered the season with a 5-game winning streak against the Salukis before losing at Southern Illinois, 53-49 earlier this season on Jan. 4. D.J. Wilkins led Drake with 14 points. Marcus Domask scored a game-high 21 points including the go-ahead 3-pointer in the waning moments.
 
Drake is 26-24 in games against SIU played in Des Moines.

Consistent Success
Drake men's basketball has won at least 20 games in five consecutive seasons (all with Darian DeVries as head coach) for the first time in program history.
 
Tucker DeVries Closing in on 1,000 Career Points
In only 61 career games, Tucker DeVries has already racked up 993 career points. DeVries is on the cusp of becoming the fourth active Drake player to record 1,000 career points joining D.J. Wilkins, Roman Penn and Garrett Sturtz.
