Men's Basketball Preview: UNI

The Bulldogs and Panthers will meet Wednesday night in Cedar Falls at 8 p.m. in a rematch two weeks after a double OT thriller.

The Basics
The Drake (21-6, 12-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play) men's basketball team will head to Cedar Falls for a mid-week meeting with in-state rival UNI (12-14, 8-8) on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m.
 
Broadcast Information
Wednesday's game at UNI will be televised live on the MVC Sports Network consisting of Bally Sports Midwest and NBC Sports Chicago Plus. The states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska will be blacked out on ESPN+, but the game will stream on the Bally Sports app and BallySports.com in the Bally Sports Midwest, Indiana, Kansas City and South footprints.

102.1/1350 ESPN Des Moines is the radio home of Drake men's basketball with Michael Admire back to describe the play-by-play with Paul Doerrfeld providing analysis.

Scouting UNI
UNI enters Wednesday on a five-game losing streak including a 71-59 loss at Evansville on Feb. 8 and 80-62 setback against Indiana State last Saturday.

Guard Bowen Born was limited to 5 points on 1-of-13 shooting from the field against the Sycamores. Sophomore swingman Tytan Anderson led UNI in scoring on Saturday with 13 points while freshman guard Trey Campbell chipped in nine points.

Born paces the Panthers with 18.0 points and 2.8 assists per game. Anderson averages 12.6 points and 9.1 rebounds. Freshman Michael Duax has contributed 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game so far this season.

UNI was picked to finish fifth in the 2022-23 MVC preseason poll. 

Ben Jacobson is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Panthers with an overall record of 334-214.

Series vs. UNI
UNI controls the all-time series, 51-32.

The last three games between the Panthers and Bulldogs have gone to overtime including a double OT thriller at the Knapp Center on Feb. 1. Bowen Born hit two buzzer-beating 3-pointers to force both overtime periods. However, Drake outscored UNI 14-7 in the second overtime to win, 88-81. •Drake is 8-29 in games against UNI played in Cedar Falls.

Vintage Roman Penn
Roman Penn picked up his second MVC Player of the Week honor on Monday (Feb. 13). During Drake's seven-game winning streak, Roman Penn has averaged 18.3 points per game, 7.3 assists per game and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting at a 54.4 percent clip from the field (49-of-90). Penn has scored at least 16 points in six of those seven games. 
 
Adding Another to the 1,000 Point Club
Tucker DeVries (1,008 points after Saturday, Feb. 11) became the fourth active Drake player to eclipse the 1,000 career points plateau, doing so in just 62 games. He joins current teammates Roman Penn, Garrett Sturtz and D.J. Wilkins in the 1,000 point club. In fact, Wilkins and Penn both recently passed 1,500 total career points.
