Scherf Earns Medalist Honors at Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate

Lucas Scherf won by three strokes at Palm Valley Golf Club in Arizona.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Lucas Scherf (72-63-69-204, -12) followed up his career-low round of 63 in the second round with a 69 in the final round to become the individual champion at the Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The tournament win is Scherf's second of his career as the Grinnell, Iowa native navigated Palm Valley Golf Club (par 72) to win by three strokes.

"Lucas played solid all week," head coach Matt Lewis said. "He was getting off the tee well and his putter was hot. He made so many putts. I am extremely proud of Lucas as winning a college tournament is difficult and for his score to be the lowest out of 108 competitors is incredible."

Drake men's golf (304-277-291-872) finished in a tie for 14th in the team standings.

"Overall the first round really hurt us and put us too far behind," Lewis said. "I was proud of how the guys battled despite being a little 'off' this week."

Silvester Tan (76-69-77-222, +6) had a career-low round of 69 yesterday and followed that up with a 77 in round three. Nick Pittman (76-77-72-225, +9) stayed consistent and fired an even round on day three to cap off his tournament appearance.

Jack Dumas (83-70-76-229, +13) and Shayne Patel (80-75-74-229, +13) both finished at 229 for the 54-hole event with Patel firing his lowest score of the tournament on day three.

The next event on the Drake men's golf schedule will be the GCU Invitational March 13-14.
