World's Best Put on Dazzling Show in First-Ever Drake Relays Shot Put Team Competition

The shot put display on Wednesday night inside Drake Fieldhouse wowed the crowd.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Historic Drake Fieldhouse, a site that had seen many incredible athletic feats welcomed the world's best in the shot put on Wednesday, April 26 as part of the 113th Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom.

Tripp Piperi and Maggie Ewen were crowned as the first-ever Drake Relays Shot Put Team Competition champions combining to throw 40.90m (134-2).

Ryan Crouser, the reigning World Athletics Outdoor Championships gold medalist and Olympic champion in the shot put, recorded the second and third-best world indoor throws in 2023.

Crouser has 201 marks in his career of at least 22 meters, including 31 indoors. He had three attempts that surpassed the 22-meter mark Wednesday night including a best of 22.42m/73-6.75 on his first attempt. He also threw 22.30m/73-2 on his second throw and 22.02m/72-3 on his fourth attempt.

Crouser has produced 15 performances that have eclipsed the 22-meter mark in his career in Des Moines, including 10 in 2020 when he had the opportunity to compete in a pair of events in Drake Stadium in a five-day span.

Danniel Thomas-Dodd set a Jamaican women's national indoor record of 19.52m/64-0.5 on her final attempt.

Current women's indoor American record holder Chase Ealey turned in the farthest throw on the women's side with a heave of 19.54m (64-1.25).

This group will stay in Des Moines for the men's and women's WACT Invitational shot put on Saturday afternoon of the 2023 Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom.
