EUGENE, Ore. — Former champions and competitors from the Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom put on a show at the 2023 USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Hayward Field.
Thursday, July 6
Drake Relays alumna and Urbandale, Iowa native Karissa Schweizer claimed fifth in the 10,000m run with a time of 32:32.10.
Friday, July 7
2022 Drake Relays champion Vashti Cunningham won the national title in the women's high jump clearing 6-3 ¼" (1.91m).
In the men's hammer throw, 2023 Drake Relays champ Rudy Winkler claimed first place with a heave of 259-4" (79.04m).
The men's pole vault was loaded with past Relays talent. 2019 and 2022 Drake Relays champion Chris Nilsen finished on top (19-4 3/4"/5.91m) while the 2021 Drake Relays victor Sam Kendricks (19-0 ¾", 5.81m).
Saturday, July 8
Maggie Ewen (runner-up at 2023 Drake Relays, 2023 Drake Relays Indoor Shot Put Team Competition champion) won the women's shot put with a toss of 65-4 ¼ while a champion of the 2023 Drake Relays Chase Ealey finished in fourth (61 1 1/4"/18.62m).
Nikki Hiltz won the invitational women's 1500m run 2023 Drake Relays and Hiltz was victorious again in Eugene with a time of 4:03.10.
Nia Ali (third in 2023 Drake Relays, five-time Drake Relays competitor) won the women's 100m Hurdles with a dash of 12.37 followed by Keni Harrison (12.42) in second. Back-to-back Relays champion Tia Jones was fifth with a time of 12.50.
Sunday, July 9
Two-time Drake Relays champ Daniel Roberts won the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 13.05 while Iowa native Jamal Britt took sixth at 13.31.
Former Drake Relays champion Kate Moon won the women's pole vault and set the new world leading mark at 16-0 ¾"/4.90m. Another former Drake Relays winner Sandi Morris was second (15-1 ½"/4.61m).
Lagi Tausaga Collins from the University of Iowa was the runner-up in the women's discus after a toss of 214-9"/65.46m while Shelby Frank (2023 UD Champion) was fifth (185-7"/56.58m).
Brooke Anderson set the Drake Relays women's hammer throw record back in April and once again shined with an event-winning throw of 258-10"/78.65m.
Four-time Drake Relays champion Ryan Crouser (75-0"/22.86m) cruised to victory in the men's shot put. Drake Relays veteran Payton Otterdahl (72-5 ¾"/22.09m) and 2023 Drake Relays Indoor Shot Put Team Competition champion Tripp Piperi (70-5 ¾"/21.48m) got third and fifth respectively.
A pair of former Drake Relays Champions Clayton Murphy (1:46.82) and Isaiah Jewett (1:47.02) finished back-to-back in third and fourth place showings.
Shamier Little (fifth at 2022 Drake Relays) had a season-best performance to win the women's 400m hurdles at 53.34 ahead of the last two Drake Relays women's 400m hurdles champs Dalilah Muhammad (53.53) and Anna Cockrell (54.24).
CJ Allen, the current Drake Relays champion in the men's 400m hurdles earned second with a time of 48.18 followed by Khallifah Rosser (third in 2023 Drake Relays) with a fourth place appearance of 48.77.
The qualification window for the 2023 World Athletics Championships closes on Sunday, July 30. USATF is expected to announce the complete Team USA roster for the World Championships on Monday, August 7.
