Women's Soccer Preview: South Dakota State & North Dakota State

Drake women's soccer will begin its home slate on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Quick Kicks
- Drake women's soccer will play host to South Dakota State in its home opener on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming North Dakota State to Drake Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 24. 
Drake women's soccer is off to its fourth 2-0 start in program history (2023, 2016, 2012 and 2003).
- A flurry of first half goals helped Drake run past Parkside in a 4-0 season opening shutout on Friday afternoon. Hannah Olson scored the first goal of the year during the 8th minute while Maddie Rosenblum followed it up with back-to-back goals in the 25th and 27th minutes. Avery Mertz rounded out the scoring off assists by Angela Gutierrez and Maria Cervello in the 85th minute. Addie Ford (collegiate debut) and Kelti Wise teamed up for the shutout in goal.
- Friday marked the fourth season opening victory in program history since 2002.
- Maddie Rosenblum joined Emma Nagel (last season) and Hannah Wilder as the only Bulldogs to score two goals during a season opener.
- Angela Gutierrez's goal in the second minute proved to be enough in Drake's 1-0 win at Green Bay on Sunday afternoon. In net, Kelti Wise put together her first full clean sheet with four saves. 
- Gutierrez was named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week after providing an assist and goal in her debut week with the Bulldogs. 
- Drake women's soccer received the Team Academic Award from the United Soccer Coaches for their work in the classroom during the 2022-23 season.
- The Drake women's soccer team begins a stretch of eight consecutive home games that runs from Aug. 24 – Sept. 21.
- Nagel was named to the 2023 All-MVC Preseason First Team while Madelyn Smith, Laura Riesenbeck and Angela Gutierrez were all add to the Preseason Honorable Mention list.

Scouting South Dakota State
South Dakota State had a 2-0 opening week with commanding wins over Manitoba, 4-0 and Augustana (S.D.), 6-0. 
 
Maya Hansen has the early team lead in goals with three with two of those goals coming against Augustana (S.D.). Jadenn Carrillo scored a goal each in her first two games of the season. Emma Knack and Jocelyn Tanner split time in goal both games last week. 
 
The Jackrabbits finished the 2022 regular season undefeated (13-0-5), but lost in the Summit League Tournament semifinals to Omaha.

Brock Thompson enters his seventh season as the head coach of the South Dakota State women's soccer program with an impressive 82-21-17 record. 
 
Series History vs. South Dakota State
The Bulldogs are 6-8-2 all-time against the Jackrabbits after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw last season on Sept. 4. 
 
Scouting North Dakota State
North Dakota State has an overall mark of 0-1-1 after tying Boise State (1-1) and losing to Montana (3-1). 

Tyreese Zacher tallied the difference-making goal in the season opener versus Boise State while Amaya Garrett scored NDSU's lone goal against Montana. Kelsey Kallio and Loretta Wacek have both contributed assists so far this season. 

Mike Regan heads into his sixth season in charge of the Bison with an overall record of 35-44-9. 
 
Series History vs. North Dakota State
Drake owns a 9-3-1 edge over the Bison in the series. North Dakota State won 1-0 last year on Sept. 11 to snap a six-game losing skid against the Bulldogs.
