DES MOINES, Iowa -- Drake women's soccer fended off a late push by Omaha to earn a 1-0 win for its veteran players on Senior Day Sunday (Sept. 10).
"It's always a great outing to get a shutout win on Senior Day," head coach
Lindsey Horner said. "We didn't have a great start to the game but kept getting better as the game progressed. We decent job of forcing Omaha to chase the game."
Both teams adjusted to the style of play, with Drake (4-1-2) getting more looks at the goal than Omaha (2-3-2) early on. In the 38th minute,
Zoey Mahoney crossed the ball to the left side of the box, where
Lily Overstreet tapped it to
Emma Nagel, who did the rest with her left foot her third goal of the season.
Up 1-0 at halftime, Drake continued to constantly pressure the Mavericks. The Bulldog defense limited opportunities for Omaha in the second half.
With time running out in the 89th minute, Alyssa Kellar ripped a shot to the top right corner of the net, but
Addie Ford was there to swat the ball away. Ford netted two saves as she and the Drake defenders earned the clean sheet.
"We have a very short turnaround to prepare for Wednesday which is our last chance to fine-tune before MVC play," Horner said.
Drake will play host to South Dakota for a mid-week matinee on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
