Bulldogs Draw With Purple Aces to Conclude Indiana Road Trip

Kelbel scores third goal as Drake tallies fifth draw

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Drake women's soccer team concluded its road trip to the Hoosier State with a match against Evansville on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs led the majority of the second half, but the Purple Aces scored in the later stages of the match to force a 1-1 tie.

The Bulldogs and Purple Aces nearly matched each other in play through the first 45 minutes of action. Drake tallied the slight advantage in shots, 6-4, over Evansville, but neither side was able to breakthrough and the half ended with a 0-0 stalemate.

After halftime, it didn't take long for the scoreless tie to be broken. In the 46th minute, Layla Kelbel took it upon herself to get the Bulldogs on the board as she weaved past her defender and placed a shot in the lower right corner of the goal. Kelbel's goal marked her third of the season and her second in MVC play.

Hoping to bring the game back even, Evansville went on the offensive in the second half and ripped off seven shots to test the Drake defense. The Bulldogs backline fended off most of the attempts from the Purple Aces, but in the 83rd minute Amy Velazquez snuck one past for the equalizer. Neither squad managed to find a game-winner over the final minutes and the match resulted in a 1-1 draw.

"It was unfortunate that we couldn't hang on to our lead," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner said. "We did get good minutes from our bench today as it was unseasonably warm and certainly did enough to deserve a point. Layla [Kelbel's] goal was fantastic and deserving as she has continued to get herself into dangerous areas. I know our experienced players know what it takes to preserve a lead on the road, but we didn't show enough composure nor match Evansville's intensity in the last 10 minutes."

Kelbel led Drake with her goal and recorded three shots with two of them coming on target. Freshman Isabella Balsley was next in line with two shots taken and one coming on net. Eve Blakey, Angela Gutierrez, Maddie Rosenblum, and Madelyn Smith also posted one shot on goal in the match for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Addie Ford picked up a pair of saves in net.

Drake's next match will be a week from today as it welcomes Belmont to Des Moines on Oct. 13. Kickoff from Mediacom Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
