SAN JUAN, P.R. – Drake women's basketball suffered its second loss in as many days and fifth straight defeat at the hands of a familiar foe on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs battled Green Bay with both teams looking to bounce back after defeats the day prior, but the Phoenix came out on top, 64-59.
Abbie Aalsma, who joined
Shannon Fornshell in Friday's starting lineup for the first time as Bulldogs, swished a 3-pointer in transition after a
Courtney Becker block to start the scoring. The Illinois State transfer cashed in from deep again a few trips later. Both teams then cooled off with matching 2-plus minute scoreless streaks leading up to the first media break of the day.
The Phoenix (4-3) eventually rallied to take their first lead of the game at 12-11 after a triple from reserve forward Jenna Guyer. A
Courtney Becker basket inched Drake back in front as both teams fought through another scoreless drought over the last 2 1/2 minutes of the opening quarter. Drake (2-5) led 13-12 following the first period.
Drake eventually took a 20-16 lead halfway through the second stanza after Becker drained her first 3-point make of the year. Green Bay, coached by former Drake assistant Kayla Karius, mounted another quick comeback effort to take a 22-20 lead on a pair of Callie Genke freebies. Becker ended the Phoenix's 8-0 run with a free throw with roughly 30 seconds remaining in the half.
A
Katie Dinnebier 3-pointer clanked off the board and iron as time expired on the second quarter. Green Bay took a 24-21 lead into the half.
Back-to-back Bulldog buckets from Fornshell and Dinnebier got the Bulldogs back in front immediately after the start of the third period. Dinnebier started heating up from there, scoring six of Drake's next 12 points including a pair of deep threes.
Anna Miller and
Ava Hawthorne also hit from 3-point territory before a Miller deuce forced Karius to burn a timeout.
Green Bay came charging back after their T.O. and another media pause. Maddy Schreiber and Cassie Schiltz scored eight unanswered to knot the score at 41 apiece. Schiltz and Hawthorne then traded treys with under a minute to go. The Bulldogs and Phoenix were knotted at 46-46 after three quarters.
Natalie McNeal and Jasmine Kondrakiewicz put Green Bay on top in the early stages of the fourth quarter with four quick points in the paint. Drake responded with a quick 4-0 run of their own while keeping the Phoenix off the board for the next three minutes, drawing another timeout from the Green Bay bench.
Green Bay then broke the 50-50 tie with a triple from Schiltz and a tough mid-range jumper from McNeal. Drake drew closer via two
Courtney Becker free throws as the clock passed the 2-minute mark. Genke mirrored Becker on the other end with another successful trip to the line to re-extend the Green Bay lead to 59-54.
Anna Miller did her best to push the Bulldogs back in it with an old fashioned 3-point play with 41 seconds remaining, but the Phoenix were able to put it away at the free throw line. Drake dropped its second straight San Juan Shootout contest and fifth straight game overall.
Miller led Drake with 16 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.
Courtney Becker topped the Dogs' rebounding effort with 12, setting a new season best. Elsewhere,
Katie Dinnebier sniffed a triple-double with 14 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds.
Abbie Aalsma added 11 points while Becker and
Ava Hawthorne scored eight apiece.
The Bulldogs will conclude play in Puerto Rico tomorrow afternoon with the final game of the San Juan Shootout. Drake is set to take on Washington State at 3 p.m. CT.
