GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Drake men's golf concluded play in its second tournament of the season against tough competition through three days at the Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club (Par 72 | 7,015) on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Drake (284-283-290–857) finished in a tie for eighth with Gonzaga in a field that consisted of 20 teams.
"I was proud how the guys played overall," head coach Matt Lewis said. "We definitely took a big step from our previous tournament two weeks ago. Our short game was much better this week and we were able to have several under par rounds."
Silvester Tan (72-67-70–209) was at or under par during all three rounds and ended up tied for eighth place overall owning Drake's lowest round of the tournament with a 67. Nikko Ganas (71-73-72–216) also played consistently and wrapped up in tie for 47th.
"Silvester (Tan) had a great tournament and played solid all three rounds," Lewis said. "A top-10 finish out of 116 golfers is impressive. He hit the ball well and was in complete control of his game. The other guys had good moments as well. If we could have played the par fives better and eliminated some big numbers, we would have finished in the top-four as a team. We will continue to push ourselves and with the mild weather would should be able to continue to get some practice outside the next couple of weeks."
Jack Dumas (80-71-73–224) improved as play went on. Emil Riegger (71-72-75–218) and Nate Spear (70-75-78–223) each registered at least one round under par. As a team, the Bulldogs totaled an improvement of 38 strokes compared to their first tournament of the season.
Drake will play next on March 12-13 in Phoenix, Ariz., in the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course.
