PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Drake men's golf team saw low scores across the board in its third tournament of the spring season at the GCU Invitational held at GCU Golf Course March 12-13.
"We had another great tournament," head coach
Matt Lewis said. "Our final six or seven holes hurt us today but overall, I'm really proud how the guys competed today. We beat Valparaiso, who is one of the top ranked teams in the Missouri Valley Conference."
The Bulldogs (287-276-288—851) excelled in the second round for their lowest 54-hole total of the season while finishing in a tie for seventh place out of 16 teams but were contending for a top-3 finish all tournament long. Nine of Drake's 15 total rounds played were par or better.
Emil Riegger (69-69-68—206) was under 70 for three rounds in a row en route to his lowest score of the season while tying for fifth on the leaderboard.
"Emil played spectacular all three rounds," Lewis said. "His top-5 finish is our of 93 golfers in a strong field."
Silvester Tan (70-69-75—214) stayed under par for the first two rounds and wrapped up in a tie for 28
th overall.
Nikko Ganas (7171-77—219) was right at par during the first 36 holes. Following a rocky first round,
Jack Dumas (83-67-71—221) was excellent in the final two rounds. Playing in his first tournament of the spring season,
Jake Weissenburger (77-76-72—227) rounded out the Bulldog lineup.
Drake men's golf has a quick turnaround for its next event at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate March 18-19 hosted by MVC foe Missouri State.
