Men's Tennis Preview: UT Arlington

Drake heads to the lone star state for a match against the UT Arlington Mavericks

The Basics
Drake and UT Arlington are set for a showdown in Arlington, Texas on Friday, Mar. 15 at 11 a.m. The match against the Mavericks will be the Bulldogs' fourth straight road contest.

Bulldogs by the Numbers
Drake sits at an 8-6 record on the season and is 2-2 in its last four matches. The Bulldogs have had to navigate through difficult opponents in their recent matches, playing against the ITA No. 68-ranked Tulsa and the No. 21-ranked Oklahoma. Drake is looking to turn its road woes around, as they hold a 2-5 record in matches away from home.

Matija Matic and Oliver Johansson remain in the lead doubles position for Drake. Matic and Johansson have recently played against esteemed opponents on Tulsa and Oklahoma's teams. The Bulldog pair has fought through the tough competition to achieve a 7-5 record in 2024. Markus Bolin still holds the top singles record for the Bulldogs, with a 9-3 mark. His most recent match against Oklahoma was abandoned after one set.

Scouting the Competition
The Mavericks are even in wins and losses this season, holding a 6-6 record. Echoing the Bulldogs, they are 2-2 in their last four matches. Their last match was a 4-3 victory over NJIT at home. The Mavericks are a difficult team to play at home, as they boast a 4-1 record when defending their own courts.

The top doubles position for UT Arlington is held by Dante Teramo and Joan Torres Espinosa. The Maverick pair narrowly lost their last match in a tie-breaker set against their NJIT opponent. Torres Espinosa is also the vanguard for singles play, serving in the Maverick's top singles position. Last time out, he defeated his NJIT counterpart in straight sets to aid in the Maverick victory.

Drake will face UT Arlington for the first time, as the two teams have never met in men's tennis.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will hop back into league play with a match against the Illinois State Redbirds in Bloomington, Ill. on Wednesday, March 27.
