MURRAY, Ky. – The Drake University softball team got back on track tonight after dropping games two in a row. The Bulldogs racked up four runs in the final two innings to beat Murray State on the road, 6-1.
Neither team could find paydirt over the first three innings as the fourth frame started with a scoreless tie. Drake (17-17, 5-6) eventually broke the stalemate with a two-RBI double to left center off the bat of
Paige Bedsworth. Drake never relinquished the lead after going up 2-0.
Later, in the sixth inning,
Carey Koenig doubled the Drake advantage with a two-run homerun to make it 4-0 Dogs. Murray State (17-22, 5-9) got one back in the home half of the stanza, but Drake still led 4-1.
The Bulldogs then added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning on a
Frankie Rita single and a groundout. The 6-1 margin held for Drake's victory.
Koenig led the Drake offense, going 2-for-4 with a run, a walk, and two RBI. One of her hits came via the long ball.
Emma Dighton also logged two hits in four at bats while Bedsworth's pair of RBI tied for the team lead.
Molly Hoekstra started in the circle for Drake and improved to 8-3 on the with the win. She tossed 5.1 innings and struck out four Racer batters before
Jayme Scheck came on to clean things up in relief.
Drake and Murray State will continue their weekend series tomorrow at 2 p.m. back at Racer Field in Murray.
