Bulldogs Fight Hard in Defeat at Omaha

Two first-half goals prove costly as Drake remains winless

OMAHA, Neb. – The Drake University women's soccer team came up short in another road match this evening. The Bulldogs ceded a pair of first-half goals at Omaha and could not rally in the second stanza as the Mavericks took the victory, 2-0.

Omaha (3-0-2) got going about as early as possible on Sunday, scoring in just the second minute of the game. Marissa Gohr deposited her second goal of the year after assists from Alyssa Kellar and Emilie Erland. Drake did their best to even the score throughout the remainder of the first half but had no luck. Instead, Omaha added to their lead in the 33rd minute with another goal. Cece Behrens netted her first of the year with the assistance of Grace Crockett.

The Mavericks took their 2-0 advantage into the half and held on to it for the entire 45-minute second period for the win despite a feverous shift by the Bulldogs. Drake turned up the heat on Omaha but again came up scoreless after the final horn.

"It's hard to not be frustrated with our results up to this point," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner said. "But response in the second half was fantastic. There were lengths of this game where our performance was superb, but we can't find ourselves in a hole so early."

Drake recorded more shots on goal that the Mavericks, 4-3, but Omaha owned a narrow 10-9 lead in total attempts. Madelyn Smith had three shots for the Dogs to lead the team while Eve Blakey, Layla Kelbel, and Angela Gutierrez each had a pair.

In goal, Addie Force made one save while playing all 90 minutes.

"In terms of individual performances, we are starting to get glimpses of what our older players are capable of," Horner added. "They've transitioned from role players to the backbone of our team. Credit to UNO for being difficult to break down tonight."

Next, Drake will conclude their three-game swing through the Summit League with a 1 p.m. match at South Dakota State on Sep.
