DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake's special teams ace
Shane Dunning was rewarded for his clutch play over the weekend with a pair of weekly honors. The graduate student collected the Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week and Stats Perform FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week.
Dunning went 3-for-3 on Saturday with successful field goals of 38 yards, 42 yards, and 48 yards. His final kick of the day sealed Drake's dramatic win over rival San Diego, 30-28. Dunning's game-winner was his 10th career make from 45 yards or longer and the longest of the season. Saturday marked the second time this year, and fourth time in his career, that Dunning has connected on 3+ field goals in a single game.
The reigning PFL Special Teams Player of the Year also had a good day punting for the Bulldogs with six kicks totaling 269 yards for an average of 44.8 per punt. He had two downed inside the 20-yard line including an 81-yard missile that came to rest at the opposing two-yard marker. Dunning leads the Pioneer Football League with an average of 2.3 made field goals per game, and his 81-yard punt is the longest in the PFL this season.
Dunning and the rest of the Bulldogs will continue their quest for a second straight PFL title with a trip to Valparaiso this weekend. The Beacons will host Drake on Oct. 5 with kickoff slated for 12 p.m.
