DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake men's soccer team tallied its third consecutive draw and second straight scoreless result with a 0-0 showing versus Evansville on Saturday night from Mediacom Stadium.
The first 45 minutes of play between Drake and Evansville was fairly even with both teams trying to gauge one another. The Bulldogs, however, were the only side to register a shot in the half.
The Bulldogs almost got on the board with back-to-back header opportunities by
Jonathan Mendez and
Evan Carlson in the 16th minute, but both attempts were denied by the crossbar. Mendez tallied another shot moments later in the 22nd minute, this attempt coming on target, but rolled it right into the arms of Purple Aces keeper to keep the match tied heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, shots were even between the two squads with both Drake and Evansville tallying three in the frame. Landon Bange provided the Bulldogs with a scoring chance in the 69th minute, but was stonewalled to keep the scoreless game intact. In the 76th minute, Drake was once again fended off by the crossbar on an attempt by
Jack Dancer to put the Bulldogs in front.
Tomas Butkovic made his only save in the match in the 73rd minute off a header in the box from Evansville's Nacho Garcia following a free kick.
"Everyone is frustrated with another draw, but I absolutely cannot fault the group for the performance," Drake head coach
Pat Flinn said. "We're just going to keep doing what we do, which is to move on to the next action, work our tails off at training, learn from this match and prepare to beat our next opponent."
Drake held the advantage in shots on the night, 8-3, and the edge in shots on goal, 3-1. In the corner kick battle, the Bulldogs topped the Purple Aces, 5-4.
The Bulldogs remain at home for their next contest as Bowling Green comes to town on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. CT from Mediacom Stadium.
