Men's Tennis Preview: Creighton

The Bulldogs are back at home for an annual showdown against the Blue Jays.

The Basics
The Bulldogs are back home at 5 p.m. on Saturday for a match against Creighton at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Bulldogs by the Numbers
Drake is 3-4 on the season with a perfect 2-0 record at home. Last weekend the Bulldogs had three matches in Wisconsin and went 1-2.

They won the first match at Marquette 4-3, then traveled to Madison where they lost 1-4 against Western Michigan. In that match, however, Ben Johnson and Will Ecklund secured a ranked doubles win and earned Summit League Doubles Peak Team of the Week. They took down Brogan Pierce and Jack Davison 6-4 — a duo ranked No. 109 in ITA's December rankings. The following day, Drake suffered a shutout loss against Wisconsin.

The last time men's tennis played at home was on January 19 when they defeated Saint Louis and Grand View on the same day.

Scouting the Competition
The Creighton Blue Jays are off to a hot 5-1 start to the season — the program's best start since the 2014-15 season. Last year, the team went 13-9, and their season ended at the hands of Butler in the first round of the Big East tournament. Creighton's wins this year have come against Midland, Pratt Community College, Gustavus Adolphus, Doane and Saint Louis. They suffered their one loss against UNLV 1-6.

Junior Yuma Daijima from Tokyo, Japan competes in the top singles position for the team. Last Saturday, he secured two singles wins across two matches. Earlier in the season, Daijima and doubles partner Alejandro Gandini won Big East Doubles Team of the Week.

Creighton will look to defeat Drake men's tennis for the first time this weekend, as the Bulldogs are 14-0 in the matchup all-time. The Blue Jays came close to winning last season, but narrowly lost 3-4 in Des Moines.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will travel to Bloomington, Indiana to face down the Indiana Hoosiers at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 14.
