Women's Soccer Preview: Wyoming & South Dakota

Bulldogs kickoff 2025 season with pair of home matches

The Basics
The Drake women's soccer team is set to begin its 2025 season as it takes to the pitch with a pair of home contests to begin the year. The Bulldogs will kickoff their campaign on Thursday, August 14 versus Wyoming followed by a matchup with South Dakota on Sunday, August 17. The match with South Dakota will also serve as Senior Day for the Bulldogs.
 
Bulldogs by the Numbers
Drake comes into the 2025 season with high expectations again after making back-to-back trips to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title match and a second place regular season finish a season ago. The Bulldogs were tabbed as the league favorites in the MVC preseason poll this season receiving 99 total points and nine first place votes. Head coach Lindsey Horner and her squad finished with an overall record of 8-7-6 in 2024 and will look to build off the recent success'.

Scouting Wyoming
The Cowgirls, under second year head coach Josh Purdum, make the trip to Des Moines with high hopes in 2025. Wyoming finished last season with an overall record of 4-6-9 and brings a stout defense, led by goalkeeper Haley Bartel, to the pitch that totaled nine shutouts in 2024. Wyoming was picked eighth in the Mountain West Preseason Poll.
In the all-time series between Drake and Wyoming, the Bulldogs trail with a record of 1-3-1. The last meeting between the two programs was in 2015 in Laramie with Wyoming claiming a 3-1 victory.

Scouting South Dakota  
The Coyotes ended their 2024 season with an overall record of 3-9-6 and went 1-3-4 in league play. South Dakota ended its season in the Summit League Tournament with a 2-1 loss to South Dakota State in the quarterfinals.
Drake owns a 7-6-1 record all-time against South Dakota, but the Coyotes were able to get the better of the Bulldogs in their most recent matchup, by a score of 3-2, last season in Vermillion.

Up Next
Drake will begin a stretch of four consecutive road contests starting with a showdown against Western Illinois on Thursday, August 21. The Bulldogs will be back in the state of Iowa for their next match against Big 12 member Iowa State from Ames on Sunday, August 23.
