The Basics
The Drake women's soccer team is set to begin a four-game road stretch to close out the month of August. The Bulldogs start off their road trip with a matchup against Western Illinois on Thursday, August 21, followed by a trip up I-35 to take on Iowa State on Sunday, August 24.
Bulldogs by the Numbers
Drake officially kicked-off its season last week with a pair of home matches and came away with a draw and a loss in the two contests. The Bulldogs tied 1-1 in the season opener with Wyoming, as
Eve Blakey found the back of the net, and fell to South Dakota by a score of 2-1.
Madelyn Smith scored the goal for the Bulldogs against the Coyotes with
Angela Gutierrez getting credit for the assist.

Scouting Western Illinois
The Leathernecks began their season with a single match last Friday against NAIA member St. Ambrose, and came away with a 2-0 victory. Thursday's contest with the Bulldogs will be the first match against an NCAA opponent for WIU this season. Under first year head coach Ross Henderson, Western Illinois was picked to finish 10th in the Ohio Valley Conference.
In the all-time series between the two programs, Drake has the edge with a record of 10-4-1. The Bulldogs were victorious in the most recent meeting on the pitch, which came last season in Des Moines by a score of 2-1.

Scouting Iowa State
The Cyclones opened up their 2025 campaign with a 2-2 draw in a match against Portland State. Coming off a 2024 season in which ISU went 3-9-6, the Cyclones have hopes of earning a top-eight finish and qualifying for the Big 12 Soccer Championship in 2025 with a roster featuring 15 newcomers (five freshmen and ten transfers) and 11 returners. Iowa State will travel to Creighton on Thursday before hosting the Bulldogs on Sunday.
Iowa State leads the all-time series against Drake by a mark of 7-4-4. Last season the Bulldogs and Cyclones dueled to a 1-1 draw from Des Moines. The last time Drake took on Iowa State in Ames, the Bulldogs earned a 2-1 win back in 2021.
