Weissenburger Medals, Bulldogs Win Kemper Lakes Intercollegiate

Drake wins first team title since 2021 and sees first individual title since 2023

CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior Jake Weissenburger and the Drake men's golf team took home two trophies on Tuesday afternoon at the Kemper Lakes Intercollegiate. Weissenburger won his first career medalist honor finishing the tournament at -5 with a total score of 211 (65-72-74). The Bulldogs picked up their first team title since they shared honors at the 2021 Zach Johnson Invitational, and it was their first solo team title since the 2020 Zach Johnson Invitational. Drake had four of its five competitors place inside the top-20 with three members earning top-10 results. The Bulldogs (288-296-302=886, +22) bested runner-up South Dakota by eight strokes.

Weissenburger started off his tournament with a bang and fired a 7-under, 65 in his opening round. That tied his career-low 18-hole score and was the lowest round of all 78 players in the field. Weissenburger was the only player in the field to finish under par and ranked second on Par 4's (E), second on Par 5's (-5), fourth on Par 3's (E) and tallied the most birdies in the field with 14. Weissenburger is the first Bulldog to win tournament medalist honors since Lucas Scherf at the Loyola (Md.) Intercollegiate in 2023.

Luke Bohmer and Sam Johnson placed tied for sixth and 10th, producing solid results for the Bulldogs. Bohmer carded a final score of 224 after starting off with an opening round of 76 and following with back-to-back 74's. The sophomore tallied the lone eagle by a Bulldog in the tournament scoring a three on the Par-5 4th hole in the second round. Johnson was consistent shooting consecutive rounds of 74 in rounds one and two before finishing with a 78 in the final round for his total score of 226. The Bettendorf, Iowa native recorded the fifth-most birdies in the field with 11.

Dylan Drogemuller was just outside the top-15 and earned a T16 result recording a 228 total score. He posted rounds of 73-76-79 over his 54-holes of play and tallied the third-lowest scoring average on Par 5's (-4) along with Sammy Bonaobra. Bonaobra, meanwhile, finished tied for 39th at 236 (79-81-76) and tied for the sixth-most birdies among the field with 10. His final round of 4-over, 76 vaulted him eight spots forward on the leaderboard to just break inside the top-40.

Competing as an individual for the Bulldogs was freshman Luke Springer. Springer finished tied for 36th at 234 and posted rounds of 80-76-78. He tied for the sixth-lowest score on Par 5's (-3) and had five total birdies in the tournament.

As a team, the Bulldogs took advantage of the scoring opportunities on the Par 5's and had the lowest score on those holes at -18. Valparaiso was the next best team on the Par 5's at -3 for comparison. Drake also led the field in total birdies with 48.

Drake will have the next week off before it returns to action for its home tournament, the Zach Johnson Invitational. The Bulldogs will tee it up from Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines with play beginning on Oct. 19 and concluding the following day on Oct. 20.
