Bulldogs Roll Past Chicago State Cougars, 7-0

Drake extends winning streak to seven with dominant home victory

DES MOINES, Iowa — Drake men's tennis continued its strong run of form Friday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep of the Chicago State Cougars at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 overall, while Chicago State fell to 1-7 on the season.

Drake secured the doubles point in convincing fashion. The pairing of Ulysse Verrando and Adan Tarquino set the tone with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Joao Teixeira and Justin Atkins. Alan Gonzalez and Benjamin Johnson followed with a dominant 6-0 victory at the No. 2 position to clinch the point. The No. 3 match featuring Arin Menon and Alex Yeager was left unfinished at 4-1.

"It was a complete day for the guys," Drake head coach Justin Stuckey said. "Chicago State is a well-coached team, and they really fought hard on every court. We got on the board early with Ulysse and Adan for doubles, and that really helped our momentum keep going into the singles. We still have some things we need to work on and keep improving on but overall it was a good job today from the guys."

The Bulldogs carried that momentum into singles play, claiming all six matches to complete the sweep.

Samuel Melaga was first off the court with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles. Benjamin Johnson followed at the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win, and Alex Yeager added a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 6.

Jose Alessandro Hernandez Frias secured a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, defeating Andrew Kunaka, 6-3, 6-4. Alan Gonzalez posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 position.

Christian Winstead capped the afternoon with a hard-fought comeback at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set 6-3, Winstead rallied to take the second set 7-5 before closing out the match in a 10-5 super tiebreak.

Drake has now won seven consecutive matches and remains unbeaten at home during the stretch.

The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday morning when they host the Saint Louis Billikens at 9:30 a.m. at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
